Watch as mountains rise above the trees, quiet ponds reflect the morning sky, and winding roads lead you deeper into Maine's North Woods. Around the next bend, you might discover a breathtaking overlook, a soaring eagle, or even a moose quietly feeding along the edge of the forest.

Whether you're visiting during the lush greens of summer or the brilliant colors of fall, these scenic drives showcase the beauty that makes the Moosehead Lake region unlike anywhere else in Maine.

So take your time. Pull over when it's safe. Breathe in the fresh air. Sometimes the most unforgettable moments are the ones you never planned to find.

Why Scenic Drives Around Moosehead Lake Are Different

The roads surrounding Moosehead Lake aren't simply a way to get from one place to another—they're part of the adventure. Unlike busy highways, these winding routes invite you to slow down and take in the landscape. Every season offers something new, from wildflowers in early summer to fiery maples in the fall. Wildlife, mountain views, quiet lakes, and small North Woods communities all become part of the journey.

The journey from Rockwood to Jackman and on to The Forks is one of my favorite ways to experience the Maine North Woods. Every mile offers something new—towering mountains, sparkling rivers, dense forests, and quiet stretches of wilderness that remind you just how wild this part of Maine still is.

The beauty isn't found in one single overlook. It's in every crest of the hill, every winding bend in the road, every quiet knoll, and every glimpse of the water appearing through the trees. Roll the windows down and you'll notice something else—the air changes. Along the rivers and streams, it becomes cooler, fresher, carrying that unmistakable scent of the Maine woods.

Jackman is one of my favorite places to stop along the way. A visit to the Jackman Trading Post has become a tradition for me. It's one of those places where you never know what you'll discover. From unique Maine gifts and outdoor treasures to items you probably won't find anywhere else in the state, it's worth taking the time to wander through the aisles. If you're anything like me, give yourself a little extra time. Every visit I tell myself I'm "just going to look around," and somehow I always leave carrying something I couldn't resist.

Before you leave town, treat yourself to an ice cream from The I Scream Parlor. After a beautiful drive through the North Woods, there's something about sitting outside with an ice cream cone that just feels like summer in Maine.

As the drive continues toward The Forks, the scenery becomes even more spectacular. The rivers winding through the mountains create breathtaking views, especially in late summer and fall when the forests are painted in brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. It's the kind of place that makes you slow down, pull over, and simply take it all in.

This isn't a drive to check off a list. It's one to experience.

If you're heading south after your Moosehead Lake vacation, consider making this your journey home. Rather than taking the quickest route, spend one last day exploring the North Woods. From the mountain views around Rockwood to the unique stops in Jackman and the beautiful rivers flowing through The Forks, it's a drive that reminds you why you came to Maine in the first place. By the time you connect with Interstate 95, you'll feel like you've experienced one last unforgettable adventure before heading home.

A Waterfall Worth the Journey

If you're planning a visit to Moxie Falls, here's a local tip that can make your trip much more enjoyable.

For the safest and easiest route, head toward Abbot first. I always recommend stopping at the Abbot Village Bakery for a fresh pastry, sandwich, or sweet treat before entering Moxie Falls into your GPS. This simple detour keeps you on the paved route and helps you avoid the active logging roads that can nearly double your travel time.

The logging roads in Maine's working forests are exactly that—working roads. Active logging trucks, heavy equipment, rough road conditions, and sharp rocks brought to the surface by graders can make them unsuitable for most visitors. Taking the route through Abbot lets you relax and enjoy the drive instead of worrying about road conditions.

Once you arrive at Moxie Falls, the pace changes completely.

A short, easy walk through the woods leads you toward one of Maine's tallest waterfalls. Long before the falls come into view, you'll hear the unmistakable sound of rushing water echoing through the trees. As you reach the viewing platform, the cool mist drifts through the air, offering a refreshing break on a warm summer day while the waterfall crashes into the gorge below.

Take your time here. There's a picnic area where you can enjoy lunch surrounded by the sounds of the forest before continuing your adventure.

From Moxie Falls, you can continue on to Jackman, explore the Jackman Trading Post, stop for an ice cream at The I Scream Parlor, then complete the loop through Rockwood before returning to Greenville. It's one of those full-day adventures that combines scenic driving, a waterfall hike, mountain views, local stops, and some of the best scenery the Maine North Woods has to offer.

Trust the local route, not just your GPS.

Not every road in the Maine North Woods is intended for visitors. Choosing the paved route through Abbot makes for a safer, more relaxing day and gives you the chance to discover one of my favorite little stops—the Abbot Village Bakery.

Mount Kineo

Moosehead Lake, where every curve offers another glimpse of the water and the mountains beyond. It's the perfect drive to slow down, roll down the windows, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the lake before reaching one of Maine's most iconic landmarks.

When you arrive in Rockwood, the adventure continues aboard the Kineo Shuttle Ferry. It may only be a short ride across the water, but somehow it still feels exciting every single time. Watching Mount Kineo grow larger as the ferry approaches the island never gets old. It brings out the kid in me every time.

Once on the island, you'll discover that Mount Kineo offers two hiking experiences. The Indian Trail provides a steadier climb through the forest, while the Bridle Trail offers a gentler route to the summit. Both reward you with incredible views overlooking Moosehead Lake and the surrounding mountains.

One of my favorite parts of hiking Mount Kineo isn't just the scenery—it's the little things along the way. The fresh scent of pine drifting through the woods. The cool lake breeze filtering between the trees. Friendly hellos exchanged with hikers passing on the trail. And if you're lucky, you may hear the unmistakable calls of the peregrine falcons nesting high on the cliffs behind the mountain.

Take your time here. Pause often. Look out across the lake and imagine the generations of people who have stood in this very place, taking in the same incredible view. Some places are beautiful. Mount Kineo is unforgettable.

Some of the best moments happen on the way up. Listen for the peregrine falcons, breathe in the fresh pine air, and take a moment to look back over Moosehead Lake. The memories you make along the trail are just as special as the view waiting at the top.

Moosehead Lake Shoreline Drive

The Perfect Day to Slow Down

Not every adventure needs a destination.

Sometimes the best day is the one where you simply follow the shoreline of Moosehead Lake and see where it leads.

As you leave Greenville and follow the eastern shore toward Beaver Cove and Lily Bay State Park, you'll discover one scenic view after another. The lake sparkles through the trees, Mount Kineo rises in the distance, and every mile seems to invite you to slow down just a little more. During late September and early October, this drive becomes one of my favorite places to enjoy Maine's spectacular fall foliage as the forests surrounding the lake come alive with brilliant shades of gold, orange, and crimson.

Pack a picnic, roll down the windows, and don't be afraid to make unplanned stops. Spend some time exploring Lily Bay State Park, where peaceful shoreline views and quiet picnic areas make it easy to enjoy an afternoon by the water. If you're looking to stretch your legs, there are several lesser-known hiking trails throughout the area that offer beautiful views without the crowds.

History lovers may also want to visit the B-52 Memorial, off the Prongue Pond Rd, a moving reminder of an Air Force training accident that became an important part of the region's history. It's a place of quiet reflection, tucked away in the Maine woods.

Before heading out for the day, I always recommend stopping at Breton's Store. Pick up fresh-made sandwiches, snacks, cold drinks, and everything you'll need for a lakeside picnic. It's one of those local places that has just about everything, and it's become a favorite stop for both locals and visitors.

This isn't a drive with a schedule.

If you have a little extra time and enjoy exploring beyond the usual tourist stops, continue north toward Kokadjo.

This tiny North Woods community proudly boasts a population of "not many," and that's part of its charm. Stop by the Kokadjo Trading Post, say hello to Marie, and take a few minutes to browse this classic Maine outpost. It's one of those places where conversations come easily, visitors are welcomed like old friends, and you leave feeling like you've experienced a small piece of authentic Maine.

Just across the road, Roach Pond offers one of my favorite peaceful views. On a calm day, the mountains and surrounding forest reflect beautifully across the water. During the fall, when the hillsides are glowing with brilliant reds, oranges, and golds, it's a place that's worth stopping to simply admire the scenery for a while.

One of my favorite things to do is pull into one of the scenic overlooks, turn off the engine, and simply listen. The sound of the wind through the pines, loons calling across the lake, and the gentle waves along the shoreline are reminders that some of Maine's greatest treasures aren't attractions at all—they're the quiet moments in between.

Those are the moments I remember.
